Alaska Report

Muhammad Lockett Mr. Benton Civics 30 October 2011 When Mr. Benton allowed us to pick our states for this report, I wanted to strike out a state that I knew little about. So I chose Alaska. And I have learned so much. tolerate me to work and tell you all some of the things I leaned. Alaska is the Statess 49th state, and was admitted to the union on January 3, 1959. However, America did not bust or own Russia first. A Dutch adventurer ringingd Vitus Bering (who was workings for Russia) and a Russian explorer named Alexei Chirikov discovered the Alaskan main dirt and the lowly islands called the Aleutian islands which are a part of Alaska in 1741. The bound Aleutian lower downs from the Aleut natives that were indigenous to Alaska along with some other tribes such as the Inuit, Haida, Tsimshian, Eskimo, and many more. As a matter of fact, Alaska gets its name from an Aleutian term that means, great land. America purchased Alaska from Russia in 1867. We bought it for 7.2 million dollars, which was 2 cents an acre. Thats a good bargain! The fact that a goliath constitution of land that is a fifth of the size of the U.S. was only 2 cents an acre is almost fruitless to me. The purchase agreement was signed by William Henry Seward on March 30, 1867. The Senate approved it on may 27, 1867. William Henry Seward was the escritoire of state during the Lincoln administration. Many race were against the idea of the U.S. procuring the grunge of Alaska. Many people gave it the nickname of Sewards Folly or Sewards Icebox because they felt as though Alaska was nothing more than a barren wasteland. They fancy that nobody would come there and that it was just one big, giant mistake or folly. But soon this was proven to be false. As 2010, Alaska has a community of 710,231 people. The town of Seward, Alaska has a population of 3,016 people. Does the name Seward ring a bell?
